CARF Board of Directors elects Donald Dew to fill open seat

Dew will complete former Board Member's term

August 25, 2015, Tucson, Arizona — The CARF Board of Directors elected Donald Dew to the Board during its meeting on August 14 after a unanimous recommendation by the Nominations and Board Development Committee. Dew will resume the unfinished term of former Board Member Karen Chastain, which ends on December 31, 2017. Dew is currently the president/CEO of Habilitative Systems, Inc., in Chicago, Illinois.

“Health and human service entities in today's environment face a period of intense challenge and adversity,” said Dew after he was elected. “The need for quality assurance vehicles, such as CARF, has never been greater. I look forward to joining the diverse group of leaders on the Board of Directors to promote quality, and advance CARF's mission. Both public and private agencies globally can continually benefit from best practices reflected in CARF standards.”

Dew has two and a half decades of experience working with CARF through Habilitative Systems, Inc., which has been accredited by CARF since 1991. He previously served on what was then the CARF Board of Trustees between 1996 and 2001, and is also a former CARF surveyor for both the behavioral health and employment and community services accreditation areas. “I welcome Donald Dew back to CARF's governing board,” said Brian J. Boon, Ph.D., CARF president/CEO. “He has been a tremendous advocate for quality services and options for persons receiving services in the areas that CARF accredits. CARF is most fortunate to have his contributing perspective as we continue our global mission of extending the reach and quality of health and human services.”

In the past, Dew has advised on the creation of new and updated standards through CARF's National Advisory Committees, the precursors to what are now called International Standards Advisory Committees (ISACs). His professional experience working with health and human service programs spans 37 years, including in the fields of aging services, behavioral health, child and youth services, employment and community services, and medical rehabilitation. Dew has 25 years of CEO experience, and has additionally demonstrated an extensive governance and academic background while serving as an adjunct faculty teaching organizational development at Lewis University since 2006, a visiting lecturer of human service organization at the University of Illinois since 1995, and a past Board Member at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital.

Herb Zaretsky, Ph.D., CARF's Board Chair, said of Dew's election, “Mr. Dew brings vast experience and expertise in a wide range of health and human service disciplines. In combination with his familiarity with, and support of, CARF's vision, the Board of Directors unanimously elected Mr. Dew. I know that Mr. Dew will be an excellent asset to the CARF Board, and I personally look forward to working with him.”
